Celery

Plant Collected: Celery/ Acevedo farm, Pine Island, NY

Date Collected: 09/21/2012

Part of plant used and amount: 1bundle of celery

Extraction process notes: Chopped celery tops (leaves) and boiled for 1 hr

Material/ WOF: 2 oz Cormo fleece

Dye/volume: 2 qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 tsp of soda ash

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with soda ash for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Kale

Plant Collected: Kale- Stannard Farm, NY

Date Collected: 09/15/2012

Part of plant used and amount: 1large bundle of kale

Extraction process notes: Chopped kale and boiled for 1 hr

Material/ WOF: 3oz alpaca fleece 3oz of Merino fleece

Dye/volume: 2 qts ½ qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 tsp of soda ash

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with soda ash for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Lavender

Plant Collected: Lavender

Date Collected: 09/13/2013

Part of plant used and amount:  2 bouquets of lavender. Used the leaves, flowers and half of the stems.

Extraction process notes: Simmered for 1 hr.

Material/ WOF: 4 oz skein of shetland yarn

Dye/volume: 2 qts

Mordant/amount:  1 tbsp

Additions: No additions

Recipe notes: Put wet fiber into dye bath.  Heat fiber at this temperature in dye bath for 40 min. Turn off heat and leave overnight to cool.

 

Mums 1

Plant Collected: Mums/ Stannard Farms, NY

Date Collected: 09/15/2012

Part of plant used and amount: 1 bundle of large mums

Extraction process notes: Boiled tops for 1 ½ hrs

Material/ WOF: 5 oz Merino

Dye/volume: 3 qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1  tbs of soda ash

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with ash for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Mums 2

Part of plant used and amount: 1 bundle of large mums

Extraction process notes: Boiled tops for 1 ½ hrs

Material/ WOF: 5 oz Merino

Dye/volume: 3 qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 tbs of soda ash ¼ tsp iron

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with ash and iron for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Radish 1

Plant Collected: Radish/ Acevedo Farms, Pine Island, NY

Part of plant used and amount: 2 bundles of radish tops

Extraction process notes: Boiled tops for 1 ½ hrs

Material/ WOF: 2oz

Dye/volume: 2 ½ qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 ½ tbs of soda ash

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with ash for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Radish 2

Part of plant used and amount: 2 bundles of radish tops

Extraction process notes: Boiled tops for 1 ½ hrs

Material/ WOF: 2oz

Dye/volume: 2 ½ qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 ½ tbs of soda ash and 1tsp iron

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with ash and iron for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Red Grapes

Plant Collected:  Red Grapes

Date Collected: 10/20/2012

Part of plant used and amount: Enough grapes to fill ½ 12 qt pot

Extraction process notes: boiled for 1 hr

Material/ WOF: 3oz of Merino fleece

Dye/volume: 3qts ½ qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 tbsp iron

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with ash for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

 

Zinnia 1

Plant Collected: Zinnia

Date Collected: 09/15/2012

Part of plant used and amount: 2 bundles of large multi colored zinnia flowers

Extraction process notes: Boiled flower tops for 1 ½ hrs

Material/ WOF: 3 oz Merino fleece  and 5 oz of  Leicester yarn

Dye/volume: 2 qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 tsp of tartaric acid

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with tartaric acid for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse

 

Zinnia 2

Plant Collected: Zinnia

Part of plant used and amount: 2 bundles of large multi colored zinnia flowers

Extraction process notes: Boiled flower tops for 1 ½ hrs

Material/ WOF: 3 oz Merino fleece  and 5 oz of  Leicester yarn

Dye/volume: 2 qts dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15%

Additions: 1 tbs of soda ash

Recipe notes: Heated up fiber in dye bath to 180 degrees with ash for 1 hr. Let cool overnight. Rinse.
