Carrot Tops 1

Plant Collected: Carrot Tops

Date Collected: 08/9/2013

Part of plant used and amount: Tops from 10 carrots

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 3hrs

Material/ WOF: 8 oz alpaca fleece

Dye/volume: Enough dye to submerge fiber

Mordant/amount: 2 1/2 teaspoons alum

Additions: 1 tsp soda ash

Recipe notes: Fiber simmered on low for 4hrs and let sit overnight to cool.

 

Carrot Tops 2

Plant Collected: Carrot Tops

Part of plant used and amount: Tops from 10 carrots

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 3hrs

Material/ WOF: 8 oz alpaca fleece

Dye/volume: Enough dye to submerge fiber

Mordant/amount: 2 1/2 teaspoons alum

Additions: 1 tsp vinegar and 1 tsp iron

Recipe notes: Fiber simmered on low for 4hrs and then fiber was removed and iron was added. Fiber simmered again on low for 1 hr, then removed from dye.

 

Dill 1

Plant Collected: Dill

Date Collected: 08/31/2013

Part of plant used and amount:  1 bunch stem and leaves

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 2-3hrs

Material/ WOF: 1/2 lb  alpaca fiber

Dye/volume: 1 qt

Mordant/amount: 1 tbsp  alum

Additions: 1 tsp of cream of tartar

Recipe notes: Heated up in a crock pot.  Left overnight to simmer on low. Let cool for 24hrs.

 

Dill 2

Plant Collected: Dill

Date Collected: 08/31/2013

Part of plant used and amount:  1 bunch stem and leaves

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 2-3hrs

Material/ WOF: 1/2 lb  alpaca fiber

Dye/volume: 1 qt

Mordant/amount: 1 tbsp  alum

Additions: 1 tsp of iron (remove fiber before putting iron into dye bath)

Recipe notes: Dyed on low heat for 2hrs.  Let cool and left fiber in dye for 48 hrs.

 

Rosemary 1

Plant Collected: Rosemary

Part of plant used and amount:  1 bunch stem and leaves

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 2-3hrs

Material/ WOF: 2 oz of wool yarn

Dye/volume: Used about 2 qts of dye

Mordant/amount: 2 1/2 tsp alum

Additions: 1 tsp of iron

Recipe notes: Iron was added to dye bath before fiber simmered on low-med for 3hrs. Left overnight to cool.

 

Rosemary 2

Plant Collected: Rosemary

Part of plant used and amount:  1 bunch stem and leaves

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 2-3hrs

Material/ WOF: 2 oz of wool yarn

Dye/volume: Used about 2 qts of dye

Mordant/amount: 2 1/2 tsp alum

Additions: 1 tsp of soda ash

Recipe notes: Soda ash was added to dye bath before fiber simmered on low-med for 3hrs. Left overnight to cool.

 

Sunflower 1

Plant Collected: Sunflower

Date Collected: 08/09/2013

Part of plant used and amount:  3 large heads. Yielded 4 qts dye

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 3hrs

Material/ WOF: 2 oz of Icelandic fleece

Dye/volume: Used about 2 qts of dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15% WOF

Additions: 2 tbs of cream of tartar and 2 tbsp of tartaric acid

Recipe notes: Fiber simmered on low in dye bath with additions for 1hr. Heated to about 180 degrees.  Turned off heat and left fiber in pot to cool overnight. Rinsed the next day with synthrapol.

 

Sunflower 2

Plant Collected: Sunflower

Date Collected: 08/09/2013

Part of plant used and amount:  3 large heads. Yielded 4 qts dye

Extraction process notes: Boiled for 3hrs

Material/ WOF: 2 oz of Icelandic fleece

Dye/volume: Used about 2 qts of dye

Mordant/amount: Alum at 15% WOF

Additions: 2 tbs of soda ash

Recipe notes: Fiber simmered on low in dye bath with additions for 1hr. Heated to about 180 degrees.  Turned off heat and left fiber in pot to cool overnight. Rinsed the next day with synthrapol.
